Boy, I hate to admit it, but, I didn't know the history of my own hometown!!
I didn't know anything about the real history of Cambridge (Galt, Preston & Hespeler). I didn't know who the first settlers were or where they came from, until I started surfing the internet. ( See the links below to see what I found.)
I mean, I remember Walkers with the elevator that had a metal gate and that weigh scale ... back then I had no problem stepping on a scale in public!!
I remember going to the movies at the Capital Theatre with the red seats and the Purple Pool Hall down the street.... which I never went in, I swear!
I vaguely remember when the Iroquois Hotel burned down, oh, and the flood 1974 ... I remember helping our neighbour, Dr. Moffat, with all his files from his office, spread all over his backyard, trying to dry them off.
The Right House ...that's where I had my daughter's ears pierced ... oh and Walter's Jewellers that's where my sister and I had our ears pierced after school one day in the 70's.
Wow, remember the old YMCA and the wire door that they had to buzz to unlock to let you in, or the police station downtown Galt on Ainslie St? How about Dot's Fish & Chips, it was just down the road from where Barnacle Bill's is now...they use to wrap the fish & chips in newspaper . Or the horse barns down by the river across from Dickson Park? My mom use to board her horse "Lucky" there.
You have to remember Woolco!! Every Saturday I'd bribe one of my younger brothers to come with me downtown on the bus...we'd get fries with gravy and a grape fountain drink, after that we'd walk down to Reid's Candy Shop and get some cheesies. Or when Harvey's was down on Water Street.... oh...remember their fresh cut fries.... or George's ...dinner #18, Nat and I still go there!
You know, I think I even remember when the library was on Water Street, across from the old Post Office.
